This arena was the first that I got the pleasure of working alongside Kalen Chock (Concept Artist). He drew up the concept art and provided concept support for the various assets I'd need to make for the background. He modeled out the stage and then painted overtop it for his concept painting. This gave me a super easy base to get started because all of the proportions were already mostly nailed down. I then went through and modeled, UV'd, textured, lit, built VFX, animated, and worked alongside our engineers to build a system of triggers and behaviors so that when players run across the stage it'd light up the tiles they're on, or when a player dies the stage would respond to it.
This stage was a ton of fun to build. Again, I had concept support from Kalen Chock, art direction from Josh Singh, and additional help from Kris Orpilla to help with character readability.
Here's a timelapse of most of the progression of the Combat Lab Arena. This timelapse doesn't capture a lot of the late work that went into the stage, but I really enjoyed the timelapse and thought it was a super neat video to see the evolution.
